Stellenbosch Wine Festival

Stellenbosch Wine Festival
When: Thursday, 30 July 2009 to Sunday, 02 August 2009

Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University is internationally recognized and boasts a proud education and sport heritage. Africa’s first microsatellite, SUNSAT, launched in 1999, was designed and manufactured by Stellenbosch University.

Students nicknamed the university Maties and, while some claim the nickname to come from the color of their maroon rugby jerseys (the word “tamatie” is Afrikaans for tomato), the name is much more likely to be a derivative of the Afrikaans colloquialism matie (meaning "buddy" or "mate") originally used diminutively by the students of the University of Cape Town's precursor, the South African College.

Amongst others, Maties have produced more than 155 rugby Springboks over the years, a very proud tradition indeed!
